Since the minimum wage increased on July 1, 2014 in California, is it effective immediately or does it start when the next pay period begins?

I have not read the statute, and I'm not going to bother for a free question, but I would be surprised to the point of shocked and astounded if it did not apply starting the first minute worked on July 1, including graveyard shift workers who would have to be paid different rates for the parts of their shift before and after midnight.
