How long and how often can a traffic court case be continued. My ex was stopped for driving with a suspended license in August 2013 and has just been granted his 4th continuance today

Assuming his attorney (or himself) waived speedy trial, then it can be continued as long as the judge will allow it. Both the state and the defendant usually need good reasons to continue. Your ex needs to talk to his attorney to see why it has been continued.
