Question

The house where I rent for about 4 yrs now in north Bergen nj have been sold from a sheriffs office to a new owner and he has increased my rent more than 81%... Can I fight this in the court or do I have no chance to change that and look somewhere else to live?

Answer

Yes, you can fight a rent increase of that amount. Regardless of who owns the premises, the Anti-Eviction act and other legislation require that rent increases be reasonable. What is reasonable is up to a judge to decide. If you want to challenge the increase, you may find it best to be represented by an attorney in your area. You should be prepared to pay the rent that has become due into court. Your attorney can advise you on how much you will need to have and whether it should be paid in part to the landlord. That is a matter of trial strategy influenced by local practice.
