Question

10/2011 had new front door and frame installed on home; licensed home improvement contractor. Steel with a wood door jamb to be reinforced with a secured steel backing plate to protect from door kick-in attack. 10/2014 a door kick-in attack succeeded due to plate not properly installed. Door & locks were fine, jamb was shattered. Improper plate installation resulted in easy access and loss of $10K cash, $15K jewelry, most not covered by insurance, and theft of identification documents. Am I able to pursue a Civil case against the contractor for the repairs, uncovered cash and jewelry losses, and ongoing identity theft protection monitoring?

Answer

Assuming that you can prove liability, you are not going to get all those incidentals as damages. I think you are going to get the cost of repair to what it should have been.
