Question

Is it possible to get a conservatorship over a family member (brother-in-law) who is an alcoholic that refuses treatment? He is drunk everyday and a young couple has moved in with him, gained access to his bank account among other things. This couple is slowly draining my brother-in-law financially. He has no job and is living off his retirement.

Answer

It may be possible to do what you propose, as a Custodian can be appointed. You'll do it quicker and easier with an attorney. You might consider asking your brother-in-law to appoint a family member as his attorney-in-fact (poa). But, if he is opposed to giving up or having his rights restricted, it may be difficult to accomplish either endeavor.

Good luck
