Question

I owned a store in California. I took on consignments from about 12 people. After a disagreement with the landlord- I got evicted.

This was a month ago. I've gotten 8 of the consignment clients paid and items back to them. I owe the other 4 about $ 7,000. Each had been previously paid out for prior consignments.

The four I still owe money to off of their consignments are now filing police reports. After losing the shop- I have been working to get everyone paid off. The last 4 will take more time.

Will I be arrested? Is this a criminal or civil matter? I will get them paid but, for now, anxiety is killing me. Before this happened- I had the best reputation in town. Now I feel as if I am awaiting someone to come arrest me.

Thanks,

Answer

While theoretically you could be charged with theft most DA's will not take the case. It should be dealt with civilly.
