As a salaried position can I be made to work 50 hours a week

Question

As a salaried position can I be made to work 50 hours a week

Answer

Maybe, maybe not. Whether you are paid a salary is only one factor out of several that determine whether or not you are exempt from wage and hour laws. In addition, your salary must be at least 2x minimum wage for a 40-hour work week, and your job must fit one of the exemption categories, the most common being management or professionals. The exact rules and exemption categorization standards, however, also vary by industry. If you are properly categorized as exempt, however, then the answer is absolutely "yes." They can work you as many hours as they can get you to work without quitting your job.

Answer

If you are salaried exempt management or professional, you can be required to work literally 24/7, as long as paid more than twice the minimum wage for a 40 hour week.
