I rent a house in Saint Augustine, FL and recently installed a floodlight/security camera because of vandalous kids egging the place.
My landlord got angry about it and is trying to tell me it's illegal.
It is pointed at the front of the property to the street and there is nothing in the lease about modifications or improvements.
I even used a temporary mounting using double sided tape because I knew she'd have a kniption if I installed something permanent.
Is she right? Is this illegal?
Signed, Confused.
Answer
I do not believe it is"illegal" to install security cameras on your own home. Obviously, you can't have it pointing towards the private areas of the home of another, but barring some local ordinance, it is not illegal.
If there is no term in the contract/lease agreement preventing this behavior, or requiring landlord's permission, then it is likely not a breach of the lease.
